Winter Car Care Tips
Routine maintenance is the key to extending the life of your car. By regularly maintaining your vehicle, you'll experience better gas mileage, reduce pollution, and be able to catch minor problems before they become costly, major ones.
As heavy snow, icy roads, and colder weather moves in, your car needs a little TLC to stay healthy during winter. Follow these winter car care tips so make sure you and your car are prepared for the change in weather and temperature:
Battery
Did you know that at 32 degrees, your car battery has 15% less starting power than it does at 80 degrees? Be sure to have your battery checked before you end up stranded in the cold on a winter night.
Windshield Wipers/Fluid
Like any liquid, windshield washer fluid can freeze in cold temperatures, so make sure to keep it filled up to help prevent this from happening often. Replace wiper blades if needed. Worn out wiper blades aren't much help when you need to brush falling snow off your windshield.
Air Filter
Inspect your air filter by holding it up to a light. If you can't see through it, it's time to replace it.
Lights/Signals
Test all lights and signals to make sure they work properly. Winter weather and precipitation make it harder to see when driving. Having properly functioning lights and signals will help other drivers distinguish your vehicle on the road.
Tires
Worn tires aren't of much use in the winter. Allow us to examine your tires for remaining tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping to help ensure you and your passengers are safe on the road.
Brakes
Brakes tend to be used more during winter than any other season. Your car's brake system is the most critical safety system for both drivers and passengers. The expert Service Team at Bill Harris Auto Center is ready and able to examine and fix any problems you may be experiencing with your brake system.
Heater & Defrosters
This is without a doubt the time of year that your heating system will get the most use. You don't want to be uncomfortable in a cold car or straining to see through a fogged up windshield that won't defrost in the winter. A quick inspection from our Service Team can make sure the heating system in your vehicle is functioning as it should be.
